God desires time alone with us. Being alone is a beautiful opportunity to turn down the volume of our lives and spend time in God’s presence.
It is when we are alone with God that we are able to know God and His will for our lives. To never be alone is to miss Jesus. There are certain things that we will not learn when others are present. We are more honest with ourselves when we are alone in God’s presence and away from distractions. But we are often afraid of being alone with God.
A quote by actress Lynn Whitfield exposed the reason why being alone is a challenge. She says, “The stillness to get out of our own way and feel God’s presence is difficult because our instinct is to never be alone.”
In the book of Genesis, Jacob had come to the end of himself and realized that doing things his way was not God’s best for him. When Jacob was alone, a man wrestled with him.
Genesis 32:24 says, “So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak”. Jacob cried out for God’s blessing on his life. “Then the man said, ‘Let me go, for it is daybreak.’ But Jacob replied, ‘I will not let you go unless you bless me’” (v.26).
In verse 30, Jacob knew he had wrestled with God. He said, “I have seen God face to face”.
The Lord desires that we are conformed in his likeness. It is our surrender that God is after when he wrestles with us. In the end, we receive a blessing. It’s a wrestling match worth fighting for.
Prayer: Lord, Jesus, help me to be still. I want to know you and be all you intend me to be. I am desperate for you. I will not let you go until you bless me.
