Who is Jesus Inviting You to Become?
Week One: Expect the Unexpected
When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were), he left Judea and went again to Galilee. He had to travel through Samaria; so he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property that Jacob had given his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, worn out from his journey, sat down at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. (John 4:1-7)
In John 4, the conversation with the unnamed woman at the well is the longest conversation recorded in Scripture. Jesus was intentional about meeting her at the well. In verse 4, it reveals that, “He had to travel through Samaria.”
The woman was not expecting to see anyone at the well, not at that time of day. It was noontime, the hottest part of the day. Because she was known for looking for satisfaction in relationships with men, she went to the well when none of the other women or people in town would be there. She never expected to encounter anyone at the well; especially not Jesus.
How are you like the woman at the well? Have you ever felt less than and alone in your circumstances?
Has avoiding what makes you uncomfortable become normal for you? Why?
How is what you are uncomfortable about significant to who Jesus is inviting you to become?
Have you ever encountered Jesus in an unexpected way or at an unexpected time?
Describe a time when Jesus wanted to give you more of Himself and it was a time you least expected? Perhaps, a time you were not ready or didn’t even know you needed Him.
Write out Isaiah 55:8-9.
Dear Jesus: Thank you for always pursuing us and showing up in ways we didn’t expect. Your pursuit is never by accident. Thank you for your love and not giving up on who you created us to become.
