Perhaps we’ve overlooked the importance of bearing fruit.

Have you ever thought about how beautiful it is when a woman “bears fruit” she not only provides evidence that she is a disciple, but she pleases and glorifies God?

Many people in churches today believe themselves to be Christians but are not living as disciples of Jesus. We’ve not done a good job of emphasizing the necessity for believers to become disciples, let alone bear fruit.

Bearing fruit is a beautiful indicator of spiritual growth and the result of the Holy Spirit working from the inside out. God’s will for us is that we bear fruit which makes it not optional for disciples who are followers of Jesus Christ.

In Matthew 7:16, Jesus said that we will be known by our fruit. John 15 overflows with the importance of bearing fruit. Jesus said, "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples" (John 15:8).

In this same chapter, we see God’s investment in us bearing fruit to the point that those who bear fruit are pruned so that they produce more fruit. Strong warnings are given about the dangers of not bearing fruit.

The most familiar passage about fruit is the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

More often than we care to admit, we all struggle to bear fruit. Like in our marriages, we need more gentleness in our expectations of our husbands, kindness to our coworker we don’t really like, peace in our singleness about the relationship ending or being single, patience with our children when they stress us out, faithfulness to pursue God more than the distractions vying for our attention, self control to resist temptation and choose God’s way over our own desires.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth—with the help of the Holy Spirit, the fruit-bearing woman must die to self to cultivate fruitfulness.

You don’t have to navigate your spiritual growth journey to bear fruit alone.
