Who is Jesus Inviting You to Become?

Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.  Could this be the Messiah?”  They left the town and made their way to him.  (John 4:28-30)

 

We all have experienced the disheartening reality of not being seen or considered.  That was not the case for the Samaritan woman who in the heat of the day met Jesus who was waiting for her at Jacob’s well.

 

It is a beautiful thing that Jesus knows and sees us before we ever consider him.

 

In this final Week 7 Devotional—Come, See Jesus—we find the woman at the well leaving her water jar running back to town.  This is the same woman who just hours ago was going to the well in the hot sun to avoid seeing people.

 

Now she is telling as many people as she could to “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.  Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:28-29)

 

When we have an encounter with Jesus, our lives are changed forever.  The Bible tells us that true followers of Jesus—out of their love for Him and what He has done for them—will desire to help other people to see Him and be changed by Him.

 

How then did we become a culture that invites others to come, see us more than we invite others to come, see Jesus?

 

The word come is a beautiful invitation word.  Throughout the Bible, we find Jesus inviting us to come.   “Come, follow me,” Jesus says, “and I will make you fishers of men.”  Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”  

 

As welcoming as the word come is, following Jesus is costly.  He lets us know we must count the cost to be His disciple.

 

How do you feel being handed a menu at a fine dining restaurant that chooses not to list their prices, or ordering food from an app that doesn’t provide you with a cost for their menu items?

When the disciples came back to meet Jesus at the well, they were surprised to see Jesus talking to a Samaritan woman.  Jesus used the opportunity as a teaching moment to remind His disciples that the fields were ripe for the harvest.  In other words, there were plenty of people in the world ready to receive the good news of Jesus Christ.

The Samaritan woman didn’t need a reminder.  John tells us that the woman left her water jar behind and went back to the city to share her news about Jesus.

What water jar(s) is Jesus wanting you to leave behind?

Describe how the grace of God deeply touches your heart still about the jar(s) you used to bring to dry wells to get filled that the living water has satisfied your thirst?

Who do you see that is thirsty for Jesus that God wants you to pray and consider having a conversation with them about Jesus?

Ask yourself, “If I don’t, then who will bring them to Jesus—the living water—to quench their thirst?

Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of what the woman said when she testified, “He told me everything I ever did.”  So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.  Many more believed because of what he said.  And they told the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, since we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior of the world.”  (John 4:39-42) 

 

The story of the woman at the well is in essence about a woman who had a conversation with Jesus who changed her life.  A woman who finally knew the gift of God, but also the love and grace of God.  A woman who was not ashamed of the gospel.  A woman who experienced the living water and was so excited about her transformation that she had to tell others.

 

When was the last time you shared the good news of Jesus Christ?

Review the key verses in our devotional (John 4:28-30).  Write your testimony based on the Samaritan woman’s simple but transparent message.

 

Perhaps, start with what jar(s) you have left behind.  Acknowledge that you have sinned.  The woman at the well told the people that Jesus knew “all she had ever did”.  Even though, like the woman at the well, others might be familiar with your past shortcomings, share Romans 3:23.  Pray that the Holy Spirt will guide you to write your testimony:

John 7:37-38 is a beautiful invitation of Jesus inviting us to come.  It reads:  On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him."
